You can see the first style barrel which has the front screw at the bottom, just like the later MP-18 SMGs, was changed fairly soon and was moved to the top. Later model MP-28s had screw at top of front flange but never had a screw in magazine housing to retain barrel. Front view shows a barrel with barrel tool and front screw removed to show placement.
